Heartland

Heartland

The 260-person, half of one square-mile town of Washtucna in Adams County, Washington. Washtunca was founded by two Iowan settlers in 1878 who came out west to raise horses. Many followed them to the area in the following years, enough so that in 1886 when the town's first railroad was built, dozens of farms had popped up in the town's surrounding areas. In the first five years, 30,000 bushels of wheat were shipped out of Washtunca.
