A Day's Drive

Hillsides of glowing wheat in the agricultural area north of the Snake River Valley. This serene prairie was formed during the last Ice Age by glacial outflow from the West and South. These glaciers left dunes of fertile silt, which were so ideal for wheat farming that from 1860-1890, almost the whole region was converted from pasture into wheat farms. This growth was facilitated not only by the soil quality but by the relative abundance of water that the Snake River and its tributaries provide.
