PALOUSE: AUTUMN

Wheat fields outside of Washtucna. For the first few decades that tractors were available for the commercial consumption, they remained heavy and awkward. New farming technologies such as the tractor and the combine were a nightmare to operate on the Palouse's uneven, steep rolling hills. This led the area to resist adopting tractors until well after they were invented; in 1930 only 20 percent of Palouse farmers owned or used tractors.
