A small crumbling tectonic rift covered in spongy, colorful mosses and lichens up from the shores of Lake Þingvallavatnin. This area is home to the site of Iceland's first parliament and national court system, which were founded in 930 AD. Through the summer, the assemblymen, chieftains, and bishops met at the lake and stayed in temporary, hut-like housing. Iceland is the largest group of peaks above sea level in the entire Mid Atlantic Ridge. 200 million years ago this ridge, the intersection of the American and Eurasian tectonic plates, split apart the four continents of North America, South America, Europe, and Africa and is the longest range of mountains above or below water in the world.
