I WANT US TO GO WEST

When Nothing Happens

When Nothing Happens

One of my favorite songs as a small child was a Woody Guthrie tune called “Roll on Columbia.” My father was a salesman and he often traveled on these roads that are in my photographs. He was always meeting people along the way and he met a man who gave him a Smithsonian recording of Woody Guthrie’s music. The 2-album set became my personal treasure, a link to a very rare and precious sliver of American culture. This scene near the Gorge Amphitheater just reminds me of sitting on the floor of my simple living room as a child, doing nothing much, listening to Woody Guthrie and dreaming of the Columbia River. A theme in my work is how our vast landscapes commingle with towns and places where people settle. I love how this vast and ancient-seeming bit of earth serves as a backdrop for the lives of the people in the houses back in the distance.
